It is often fascinating to read about stuff that has happened around the world, but sometimes you often hit a depressing stretch of genocides and massacres that took place. Because history ain’t a neat subject.

Here’s a bunch of stuff that happened in the last 100 years that is worth mentioning, especially if your understanding of history is a little wonky when it comes to other countries (I’m surprised sometimes when a friend tells me I’m the history dude).

Also, many more events exist, so they’ll come too. Like Salvadoran Death Squads, the Arab spring, the Bangladesh Genocide, the thing China never say happened on June 4th 1989 + more.

Note : This is NOT fun. So don’t read unless you got a strong stomach. And a bottle of ̶v̶o̶d̶k̶a̶ water.

Holodomor : One of the reasons that Nehru never adopted collectivized farming in India. Collectivized farming as ordered by Stalin starved the entire population of a country (which at that point in time was part of the glorious Soviet Union).

The Great Leap Forward : One of the main reasons Nehru never adopted collectivised farming. 25–44 million dead cuz Mao thought he had great ideas. Also, this is when the Chinese started eating all sorts of animals, giving rise to animal markets like Wuhan. So communism caused Covid? (if you don’t believe the lab leak theory, that is. Also, I’m joking. Way world is going, I feel like I may need to clarify that).

The Cultural Revolution : You kill one person, you go to jail. You cause a famine that causes (a minimum) of 25 million dead? You get another shot to prove yourself. And so Mao had another great idea. Let’s destroy old China!

Students hanging old people for being anti-communist and being part of old China, destroying monuments, etc. You get the idea. Basically, indoctrinated young people are both stupid and dangerous (remind you of someone?).

Khmer Rouge : If you’re unfamiliar with this, you’re probably not Cambodian. Also, Pol Pot. Read about him. Cuz not enough people understand exactly how dangerous a person who sounds wise can be. Also, imagine being killed cuz you had glasses. Or knew a second language.

Sidenote : In what is possibly the most unintentionally funniest song ever, the Norwegians wrote a victory song for the Khmer Rouge, praising it and singing about the freedom of Cambodia. Talk about aging very badly. It’s a good song though.
